UPDATE: ? and the Mysterians had to rerecord their own hit after losing rights to the original. I guess that’s where the new video comes from. Wikipedia says they “may be” the first Latin rock group to have a general audience hit (I would of thought Richie Valens but what do I know). It’s a great read of their history and includes gems like this:
The band’s frontman and primary songwriter was ?. Though the singer has never confirmed it, Library of Congress copyright registrations indicate that his birth name is Rudy Martinez. His eccentric behavior helped to briefly establish the group in the national consciousness. He claimed (and still claims) to be a Martian who lived with dinosaurs in a past life, and he never appears in public without sunglasses. He talks about traveling into the future and visiting other planets, asserting that he has done so. No other witnesses are known to have shared his questionable claims.
They don’t make slippers like that here.

Japanese new wave band The Plastics 1980 video for Top Secret Man - Unfortunate intro, but a great song/video none the less. I especially love the synth solo around 1:12.

Also, the lesser known Moon Riders, with (according to google translate) Know About Her Two, Three Things. Sounds to me like it should be called Love You, but who am I to question google translate.
I guess I’ve been living under a rock because I’ve just now seen the award winning video for Radiohead’s “Karma Police” (link because it won’t let me embed for some reason). Jonathan Glazer, the director who also did “Sexy Beast”, said the following about the video:
I regard “Karma Police” as a complete failure, because I decided to do a very minimalist, subjective use of camera, and tried to do something hypnotic and dramatic from one perspective, and it was very hard to achieve and I feel that I didn’t achieve it. But I did feel like I achieved what I wanted to do in the “Karma Police” video when I did UNKLE’s “Rabbit in Your Headlights” video. It’s definitely a partner to the Karma Police video, a couplet for me. I did the UNKLE video because I felt I had missed emotionally and dramatically from a simple craft point of view.

Personally, I think Karma Police is more interesting though obviously less visceral. I love the implied story and slow build of tension. I do think he achieved something “hypnotic and dramatic.” “Rabbit in Your Headlights,” is good too, but about halfway through it starts to get a little silly for me. Even though I have “Rabbit in Your Headlights” embedded here, I recommend seeing “Karma Police” first, especially if you’re like me and have been living under a rock.
Janelle Monae evokes Maya Deren among others in her fresh video Tightrope. Io9 has a great article about her sci-fi inspired music. Check it out:
